Circa 1903. An early game gun by James Purdey and Sons. This side by side game gun is furnished with 2 sets of chopper lump barrels. (A) 31" and (B) 29". Both have 2 - 3/4" chambers with ejectors. Ribs are (pigeon rough) matte concave and tapered with round white mid and front bead sights. Chokes in (A) Full and Full, (B) Improved Cylinder and Cylinder. Right barrels read "MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTHS FLUID PRESSED STEEL", left barrel reads "J.PURDEY & SONS - AUDLEY HOUSE SOUTH AUDLEY STREET - LONDON". Both sets of barrels on bottom are stamped with serial number "17875" and marked choke near barrel flats. (A) barrels stamped "M" with loops stamped "28048 and 28049. (B) barrels stamped "W.H." and 61956 and 61957. Barrel flats read (A) "NITRO PROOF", "12 / LC" in a diamond, "1 - 1/2 oz MAXIMUM" and with London proofs (B) barrel flats read "NITRO PROOF", "12 / C" in a diamond, 1 - 1/4 , 2 - 3/4, and with London proofs. The muted grey sidelock action with traditional rose bouquet & scroll engraving and "J. PURDEY & SONS" at bar is nicley equipped with disk set strikers, gas port escapes, side clips, double triggers, concealed third fastener, blacked engraved top lever with checkered thumbpiece and engraved and a checkered safe slide. Gun is auto safe. Sidelock plates with cocking indicators, cocking indicators are engraved with an arrow. The muted reddish brown English walnut stock has traditional checkered straight hand grip with drop points, gold oval and an orange black lined Silvers pad. The triggers are protected by an engraved and blued trigger guard that extends to a long engraved bottom tang. The guns beavertail forend with sharp checkering and Anson style push button release has engraved escutcheon, pin, and iron metal. Gun lives in a leather toe under travel case with black and gold "J PURDEY & SONS" leather trade label on inner lid and with canvas outer cover. Case is accompanied by 2 piece wood cleaning rod, cleaning tools, bone striker pot, and 2 nickel snap caps. Gun is also accompanied by a nice "JAMES PURDEY & SONS" wooden cleaning kit filled with the manufactures cleaning accessories which consists of a nylon rod, 2 sets of nickel plated snap caps (12 & 20), round nickel plated oil bottle, cleaning tools, "JAMES PURDEY & SONS LTD NEVARUST OIL" can, and cleaning patches. The inside lid of the cleaning kit with a small black and gold "JAMES PURDEY & SONS, LTD" trade label. CONDITION: (A) Barrels with 95% black benefiting from an earlier re-black. Some light handling marks from use. (B) Barrels with 98% black with some light handling marks from use. Stock and forend have handling marks from use. The triggers are crisp, ejectors are well timed, bores are bright and barrels are tight on the action. Nice game gun set up. CP
