Springfield model 1842 percussion musket dated 1848 with M1842 US marked bayonet in scabbard with frog. Many of the original smoothbore Model 1842s were rifled and converted to .58 caliber during the American Civil War era. 42" round barrel in .69 caliber smoothbore with brass blade front sight on Wickham style front barrel band. Barrel is dated 1848 near breech with "VP" proof mark on left side above wood line. Trumpet head full length ramrod is present and possibly the original. Lock is marked with US armory eagle ahead of cock with "SPRING / FIELD / 1848" behind cock. 1 piece plain walnut stock in 3 barrel band musket configuration complete with US marked military buttplate. Stock bears cartouche in oval on left side but is obfuscated. CONDITION: Excellent and still in the National Armory Bright finish and does not appear to have been cleaned with scattered light pitting throughout. Stock is excellent as cleaned at one point with finish turned dark form handling. Scattered handling marks throughout but no major cracks. Action works appropriately with crisp stops at half and full cock. Bore is mostly bright and smooth with heavy abrasion toward muzzle. Bayonet is very good and is bright with scattered pitting throughout. Scabbard and frog are very good with cracking throughout but remain intact and pliable. TON

CORRECTION: After further research, many Model 1842's were rifled during the American Civil War but remained in .69 caliber, not converted to .58 caliber as previously stated.
