Springfield US M1847 Sappers & Miners musketoon, dated 1855. Total production of the Sapper variation of the M1847 family of musketoons was roughly 1000 produced with only about 800 remaining in service in their original condition and not modified to become Artillery musketoons. The most distinguishing feature of the Sapper musketoon as opposed to the artillery variation is the 2 piece bayonet and locking lug system for the unique M1847 Sapper bayonet, which is modeled after a Roman infantry sword and produced by Ames with a locking ring much like socket bayonets of the time with a cut in the grip for mounting using a saber bayonet lug on the side of the barrel. 26" round barrel in .69 caliber smoothbore with intact 2 piece locking lug system and brass blade front sight on Wickham barrel band. Barrel is dated 1855 near breech with "VP" proof on left side above wood line. Lock is marked with US armory eagle ahead of cock and "SPRING / FIELD / 1855" behind cock. 1 piece plain walnut stock in 2 barrel band musketoon configuration complete with US marked military buttplate. Stock bears WN cartouche inside oval denoting inspection and acceptance by Walter North with what appears to be a rack number (273358) stamped over it. Musketoon is complete with an original US marked 1855 dated M1847 Sapper bayonet made by Ames Manufacturing in Chicopee, Massachusetts. CONDITION: Excellent as lightly cleaned with scattered areas of light pitting throughout. Barrel date and US eagle on lock are slightly faded but easily legible with other markings crisp. Ramrod is stuck in place and was not able to be removed for inspection. Stock is excellent and appears to be in as found untouched condition with scattered handling marks throughout with heavy handling marks toward buttplate. Stock has turned dark over time from handling. Action works appropriately with two distinct clicks at full and half cock. Bore is bright and smooth overall with modest abrasion. Bayonet is very good with light pitting throughout and markings legible. Bayonet fits and locks tightly onto two piece bayonet lug system. Overall a fine example of an extremely rare variation of the 1847 family of musketoons still in original condition with an even scarcer original bayonet that would be difficult to improve upon even for an advanced collector.
