US Model 1847 Artillery Musketoon manufactured by the Springfield armory and dated 1853. 26" round barrel in .69 caliber smoothbore complete with brass front sight on Wickham's improvement barrel band. Complete with correct full length ramrod, possibly the original. Barrel is dated 1853 near breech with crisp "VP" proof on left side of barrel above wood line. Lock is marked with typically seen US eagle ahead of cock with "SPRING / FIELD / 1853" behind cock. 1 piece plain walnut stock in 2 barrel band musketoon configuration complete with US marked military buttplate. Stock bears JS cartouche in rectangle on left side denoting inspection and acceptance by Colonel John Symington who inspected Springfield rifles and muskets from 1832-1863. CONDITION: Excellent plus overall and still in original National Armory Bright, with small scattered areas of light pitting. Stock is in matching condition with minor handling marks throughout and cartouche still sharp. Action works appropriately when cycled by hand with crisp stops at both half and full cock. Bore is bright and smooth overall with modest abrasion. Overall, a scarce musketoon in exceptional condition that would be difficult to improve upon. TON
