Early production Model 1855 percussion rifled musket made at the Springfield Armory in 1858. Standard 40" .58 caliber rifled barrel dated 1858 and marked with "V / P / (Eagle Head)" proofs. Barrel affixed with long range rear sight and retained by 3 spring-retained iron bands to a full length walnut stock with brass nose cap and iron butt plate. No patch box. Stock cartouche is faint and a brass tag marked "72" is mounted directly under it. Percussion lock fitted with Maynard tape primer system dated 1858 and marked with American eagle and "U.S. / Springfield". Rifle is complete with tulip head ram rod. CONDITION: Very good. Metal components show evidence some older cleaned corrosion with a light patina overall. Stocks good with scattered handling marks and a few more significant dings. Good bore with visible rifling and pitting. Good mechanics. BAS
