American Civil War era US Model 1855 Type II percussion rifle made by Harper's Ferry, dated 1861. These rifles are highly sought after by Civil War collectors and are scarce, with only about 7300 produced. 33" round barrel with correct 3 groove rifling in .58 caliber complete with Model 1858 multi leaf rear sight with blade front. Barrel has correct bayonet lug for saber bayonet. Barrel is dated 1861 near breech with "D (H overstamped with a W) H" inspector mark ahead of it and "V / P / (Eagle's head)" proof mark on left side of barrel above wood line. 1855 lock equipped with Maynard Tape Priming device is marked "U.S. / HARPER'S FERRY" ahead of cock with typically seen US armory eagle on Maynard priming device. Lock is dated 1861 behind cock. 1 piece plain walnut stock in 2 barrel band rifle configuration with full length tulip's head ramrod (possibly the original) and military buttplate marked "US" ahead of screw with what appears to be the letter "G" behind screw. Stock bears JS cartouche and what appears to be ABB cartouche, both in ovals. Stock is marked "75" near implement compartment. Additional nipple inside implement compartment. Interesting "RVM" marking underneath rear barrel band. Comes with US marked M1855 saber bayonet in leather scabbard. CONDITION: Very good as completely repolished with a large area of extremely light freckling near muzzle. Stock is excellent as lightly cleaned with cartouches a little faint but mostly legible. Stock has scattered heavy handling marks throughout but no major signs of distress. Action works appropriately and holds on both half and full cock. Bore is bright with modest abrasion and crisp rifling. Bayonet is mostly bright with spotting and light pitting throughout and grip has turned an even mustard patina. Scabbard has some cracking but is intact. Overall, a nice example of a difficult to find, highly desirable rifle. TON
