1856 dated US Springfield Model 1855 percussion pistol carbine. 12" round barrel in .58 caliber with correct 3 groove rifling and multi-leaf flip up rear sight with blade front. Barrel is dated 1855 at breech and retains typical VP with an eagle proof on left barrel flat above woodline. Lock is marked "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" with typical US eagle on Maynard priming device ahead of cock, with "1856" behind cock. 1 piece plain walnut stock with brass nose cap, single barrel band, trigger guard, and grip cap with carbine ring. Stock is reinforced with iron backstrap. Stock retains faint "JS" cartouche in rectangle on left side. Comes with correct carbine stock that mounts on to iron backstrap that is marked "17" and matches brass grip cap. In total, only 4,021 of the US Springfield Model 1855 pistol carbine were ever delivered and examples on the market today are scarcely seen. CONDITION: Very good as cleaned with scattered pitting and storage marks throughout. Stock is very good with repair near brass grip cap and cartouche has been touched up slightly at some point. Carbine stock is excellent with some scattered handling marks but does have about 3" depression on left side. Action works appropriately and stops on both half cock and full cock notches. Bore is dark with abrasion throughout but retains visible rifling. Overall a nice example of a must have for a US Martial Pistol collection. TON
