Springfield Model 1863 Type II rifle musket, dated 1864. 40" round barrel in .58 caliber with 3 groove rifling with rifle sight and blade front. Barrel is dated 1864 near breech with "VP" proof on left side above wood line. Lock is marked with typically seen US armory eagle with "U.S." / "SPRINGFIELD" ahead of cock with "1864" behind cock. Tulip head ramrod is full length and possibly the original. 1 piece plain walnut stock in 3 barrel band configuration (barrel bands have spring retainers) complete with US marked military buttplate. Stock bears 3 cartouches on left side that are illegible and is marked with "P" proofmark near lower trigger guard tang. Complete with US marked socket bayonet. CONDITION: Excellent, still in the original National Armory Bright finish with scattered light pitting throughout. Lock shows almost none of the original case hardening and has faded to a dull gray patina overall. Stock is very good as cleaned at one point, possibly during the period and is turning dark with age. Small crack on left side of stock near upper lockplate screw bushing. Action works appropriately with two distinct clicks at half and full cock. Bore is mostly bright with abrasion toward muzzle and visible rifling. Bayonet is mostly a dull gray patina with scattered pitting throughout. TON
