Remington Model 1862 “Zouave” percussion rifle, dated 1863. These rifles were manufactured between 1862-1865 for a total production of about 12,500 rifles. Unfortunately, due to manufacturing setbacks, almost all of these rifles arrived too late to be issued to troops although it is an extremely well built and well designed rifle for its time. 33” round blued barrel in .58 caliber with 3 groove rifling, military multi leaf rear sight, and blade front. Barrel is complete with saber bayonet lug on right side. Barrel is dated 1863 near breech with typically seen “VP” proof on left side and “STEEL R.K.A.” just above wood line. Color case hardened lock is marked “REMINGTONS” / “ILION, N.Y.” with US armory eagle over “U.S.” ahead of cock with lock dated behind cock. 1 piece plain walnut stock with brass furniture in 2 barrel band rifle configuration with sling swivels at front barrel band and trigger guard and US marked military buttplate. Stock is complete with brass implement compartment on right side. Stock bears “BH” and “HDJ” cartouches both on left side in rectangles. Included with this rifle is one correct model saber bayonet with scabbard and frog. CONDITION: Very good with almost all of the original bluing remaining with scattered light pitting throughout. Lock retains most of its bright case colors with moderate pitting, mostly at high edges. Stock is very good with markings crisp and no major signs of distress. Action works appropriately with 2 distinct clicks at half and full cock. Bore is bright with crisp rifling except for about 1” of barrel where muzzle plug has sat for an extended period of time. Bayonet is very good as cleaned with moderate pitting throughout. Scabbard is excellent with leather intact and not cracking from age but stitching on backside coming loose. TON
