Only 341 examples of this very scarce trapdoor carbine were produced at the Springfield Armory in 1871. 22" barrel chambered for .50-70 and mounted with graduated ladder sight. Arched breech block correctly marked "1870 / (Eagle Head) / U.S." Lock plate dated 1863 and marked with federal eagle and "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD". Carbine length walnut stock mounted with 1 iron band, 2 piece trigger guard, saddle ring bar, and "US" marked butt plate. Faint "ESA" script cartouche. CONDITION: Very good. Metal components exhibit a pleasing gray patina with portions of dull case colors visible on the hammer. Stock very good with a few expected marks. Very good bore with crisp rifling. Fine mechanics.
