Springfield manufactured Model 1871 rolling block rifle made under Remington's patent for the U.S. Army in 1872. According to "Remington Rolling Block Military Rifles of the World" by George Layman on page 50, this rifle is one of only about 10,000 made. 36" round barrel chambered in .50-70 Government with military ladder sight and blade front. Color case hardened action with "(Eagle) / U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1872" on right side and "MODEL 1871" on left. 2 piece plain walnut stock and forearm in 2 barrel band musket configuration with military style buttplate marked "U.S." on upper tang. Stock has Erskine S. Allen cartouche in an oval on left side of wrist. Comes with a reproduction leather sling. CONDITION: Very good with light patina and pitting throughout. Color case hardened action is beginning to fade to a dull gray patina but retains visible case colors, mostly on left side. Front barrel band appears to have been ground and repolished. Nosecap and buttplate have turned a dark gray patina with pitting throughout from storage. Stock and forearm are very good with no visible signs of major distress but scattered heavy handling marks throughout. Action works correctly and locks tightly including safety notch. Bore is mostly bright with well defined rifling with scattered light abrasion throughout. TON
