This is an impressive early war recruiting poster for an active regiment recruited in New Hampshire by the state Adjutant General J. C. Abbot, but under the authority and direction of the U.S. War Department with the state supplying only the $10.00 bounty. As the poster promised, Abbott was determined to make it by a “crack regiment,” getting commitments from the War Dept. to revoke commissions of incompetent officers and agreeing to step aside only if the government would appoint a West Point graduate to command, which was was done. The regiment saw action in the Department of the South, the Army of the James, and the Department of North Carolina in the 10th and 24th Army Corps, losing 15 officers and 169 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded on more than 60 occasions in battles such as the first and second assault on Fort Wagner (where it lost 218 men), the Battle of Olustee (where it lost 209 men), Drewry’s Bluff, Battle of New Market Heights, Ft. Fisher, and numerous other engagements including prolonged service under fire during the actions against Charleston and the siege of Petersburg. It was unusual in being rearmed with Spencer carbines in 1864. CONDITION: Very good. The center features a dynamic American eagle on shield and a large red “7.” Some folds, foxing and small losses. Untouched, but framed and very displayable as is or with conservation. Lower right corner missing, but not affecting text. SR
