Spear point blade with long matchstriker pull, marked by well known English maker A. DAVY, SPRING LANE, SHEFFIELD, with the face deeply stamped OF THE BEST QUALITY. Dark horn scales inlaid with shield on obverse; nickel silver horsehead pommels with cannon and fouled anchor motif and “Liberty and Union” crossguards. Blade with little sign of use, moderate pitting towards blade tip; scales with small areas of insect damage, trim with light wear, locking latch, and pin appear to be period replacements. "Liberty and Union” was a popular pro-Union phrase taken from an 1830 statement by Senator Daniel Webster – sometimes presented in a lengthier version, “Liberty and Union, Now and Forever, One and Inseparable”. Abraham Davy was a prominent Sheffield cutler who is well known to collectors for his bowies, dirks and particularly his folding knives. This example dates prior to the formation of A Davy & Sons and the move to the Exchange Works on Headford St. MA
