Norfolk & Western Railway "Hooter" Whistle. All brass whistle single chime whistle from the N&W Railway. These famed whistles earned the nickname of "hooters" for their distinctive sound they produced echoing through the mountains of Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky on Norfolk and Western's famed home-built freight locomotives such as the massive 2-8-8-2 Y6 class. Whistle is complete "as removed" condition with actuating lever and ball valve mechanism. Throat diameter is approximately 2 - 1/2". Affixed tag reads "Virginia Scrap Iron and Metal, Roanoke, VA. Removed from Locomotive October 1954.".
