Large bronze "Plaudite Cives" the lion tamer by Jean-Leon Gerome (1824 - 1904). Exhibited in the Salon of 1898 when executed. The Roman trainer stands by the lion - who he has just gotten to "play dead" - and bows to the public, saying "Plaudite Cives" ("Applaud, citizens"). Bronze with medium brown patina on verde antico green marble base, engraved "J. L. GEROME" in gold and with Siot Foundry Paris stamp. 19 - 1/2" T x 24" W x 12 - 1/2" D.
