French over-under large caliber double rifle with percussion ignition system made by "Caron" in Paris, France circa 1840. Beautiful damascene pattern octagon over-under rifled barrels with top barrel engraved "Caron a' Paris Arq de L. M. C. Empereur" with bead front sight and dovetailed flip notch rear sight. Barrels also have Belgian proof at rear. Gun has deep chisel floral engraved back action percussion locks marked "Caron a Paris" behind each hammer. Trigger guard is of iron with deep chisel engraving and an unknown Crest with the logo "SPERNO" with castle and hand grabbing snake. Beautiful French walnut checkered stock with iron engraved furniture including an oval plaque with the number "4" engraved on it. Gun comes with unique leather bonnet over the action. CONDITION: Overall good with aged patina and metal surfaces fading to a plum brown color. Wood has gloss finish with usage scratches and dings. Great bores and mechanics. A fine gun in need of more research. DLM
