Winchester Second Model 1866 rifle made by Winchester Repeating Arms Company made between circa 1868 and 1870. Blued rifled full octagon barrel with barrel marking "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT KING'S IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED MARCH 29.1866 OCTOBER 16. 1860" with sheared blade front sight with adjustable rear flip sight and blued full magazine. Brass frame with blued loading gate with hammer having a half cock and plain trigger. Walnut plain stocks with brass trap door buttplate and brass nosepiece with factory steel sling swivels. Block serial number just behind trigger on lower tang obliterated by period tang repair. CONDITION: A pleasing looking 1866 with blue faded to a silvery freckling patina. Brass has faded to an aged mellow golden patina with some usage scratches and dings. Gun has been broken through the wrist in the day and has a period soldered "butterfly" repair on lower tang with stock having broken piece glued back in proper position. Wood has uncleaned aged look with wrist repair and large scuff on left side of butt. Mechanics function well when cycled by hand and bore has visible rifling with light pitting. An honest used 1866.
