Regulation Civil War US Navy cutlass. Formerly known as the Model 1860, this pattern replaced the M1841 and is now dated to May 1861, with production starting in June and delivery in July. Black leather grip shows typical age gap. Wire may be replaced. Interior of guard serial numbered M/513 the Ames code for 1513. 3,600 were delivered from July through November 1861, dating this about September. Obverse ricasso dated 1861. Reverse marked, “Made by / Ames Mfg Co. / Chicopee /Mass” in scroll. Blade pad in place under guard. CONDITION: Very good. Obverse blade shows small freckling and gray at ricasso. Both sides show some gray at back edge near the tip, but metal is mostly bright. Clear blade markings. Interior of brass cup hilt shows narrow L-shaped line near edge, possibly a mended tear. Scabbard is solid, with no bends or breaks. Rivet on tip shows asterisk mark associated with officer’s cutlasses. Bridle leather frog shows cracking and loss to finish. A very good example with a very early production date. SR
