Lot consists of (A) Model 1872 cavalry officer’s saber and scabbard. Standard configuration. Hilt cast and chased with floral and patriotic motifs. Blade etched with geometric and floral motifs, and “U.S.”. Plated steel scabbard steel with brass mounts. CONDITION: Good. Wire missing from grip. Sharkskin present but worn. Aged tone to brass hilt. Pommel shows wear, but raised eagle inside guard is nice. Blade shows gray with dark gray spotting. Etching light, but visible. Scabbard plating shows wear and gray metal underneath. Good tones to brass scabbard mounts. (B) Very pretty, elaborate version of the 1872 Staff and Line officer’s sword by Pettibone. Floral cast and chased pommel, knucklebow and quillon with open-work foliate folding reverse counterguard with central US medallion. Obverse, deeply cast and chased fixed openwork counterguard with central eagle with US shield on chest. Wire bound, gray sharkskin wrapped grip. Straight double edged arris blade etched with floral and geometric motifs, Pettibone maker address, and name, “W.R. Biddle.” Browned steel scabbard with open-work floral brass mounts, including 2 ring upper mount. CONDITION: Excellent. (C) M1873 Ordnance Entrenching Tool with field modified scabbard. Standard configuration turned hardwood handle marked U.S. with wide blade with one edge turned for rigidity. Standard russet leather covered tin scabbard with brass throat and iron staple, field modified with leather belt loop replacing issue ring. CONDITION: Very good. Blade graying with 40% bright on one side; ten percent on the other. Interesting field modification. SR
