An evolution (as evidenced by the name) of the so-called Howdah pistols previously employed by big game hunters to serve as a last ditch weapon against charging game or a tiger that had jumped onto the howdah, the Lancaster pistol utilitzed a four barrel configuration that couple be rapidly fired and reloaded with surprising ease. They were heavily favored by explorers and big game hunters for their reliability, and some number were even known to have made their ways onto the battlefield, primarily in Africa. This example has a half moon front sight and is engraved "455 C F" in left gullet, "CHARLES LANCASTER. PATENT. 151. NEW BOND ST. LONDON.". All 4 barrels have "(Crown) / V", "(Crown) / CP", and "(Lion) / G" proofs, frame with "Crown / V" proofs behind each barrel. There is a "1" on lower right barrel which corresponds to frame number. Trigger guard engraved 7385. Birds head grips are checkered walnut, with rotatable lanyard loop on butt. CONDITION: Excellent, as likely period refinished. Barrels has numerous bumps and bruises throughout from but still have the vast majority of their blue finish. Frame is the distinct English high polish blue with some scratches and bruises throughout, back strap and trigger guard are essentially patina with a few extra small areas of blue remaining; front strap with more blue commensurate with frame. Locking piece retains most fire blue with some marks from handling. Grips are good with honest wear and bruising throughout, slightly askew from frame. Action works appropriately when operated by hand, bores are excellent. EW
