Colt Special Model 1861 rifled musket, dated 1864. 40" round barrel in .58 caliber rifled with 3-groove rifling, 3-leaf folding rifle rear sight, and blade front. Barrel is dated 1864 near breech with "VP" proof on left side and has "M.N.M" inspector mark with "STEEL" next to it on left side just above wood line. Lock is marked "U.S." / "COLT'S Pt F A MFG CO." / "HARTFORD, CT" with eagle on bolster ahead of cock with "1864" behind cock. One-piece plain walnut stock in 3-barrel band configuration complete with "US" marked military buttplate and iron nosecap. Stock bears "MH" and "JT" cartouches on left side. The main difference between the Special Model 1861 and US Model 1861 is the barrel bands with clamps instead of spring retainers. CONDITION: Excellent, and still in original National Armory Bright with scattered light handling marks and evidence of cleaning on lock. Stock is excellent with areas of light cleaning and crisp cartouches and no major signs of distress. Action is crisp and tight with two well-defined stops at half and full cock. Bore is bright with crisp rifling. TON
