Saginaw Steering Gear, S'G' "Prime" M1 carbine semi automatic rifle. Made late summer 1943 at Saginaw Steering Gear in Grand Rapids Michigan. No import mark found. Barrel is marked "UNDERWOOD" and is dated "9-43" over a "flaming bomb" proof. "P" proof marked in front of the band. "S'G'" marked front band/sling swivel. Front sight is marked "N" on the base, while the rear sight is a "S'G'" marked flip sight. "S'G'" marked slide, trigger group, bolt, hammer and butt plate. Stock has a boxed "S'G'" under a crossed cannons cartouche on the left side of the butt stock. The left side of the stock has a boxed "RIA/FK" rebuild stamp. "RSG" marked on the inside of the hand guard, and on the sling channel of the stock. Original parkerized finish on most of the metal components. Light oil finish on the stock. Union Hardware marked "U"15 round magazine is included. CONDITION: Metal retains 90% of its original finish with light wear and handling marks. There is a crack on the bottom of the receiver, next to the front leg. Wood has a few minor dings and scratches. Bore is clean with crisp rifling. Muzzle erosion gauges at a 1. Mechanically fine. Magazine is very good with light wear. Minus the receiver, this is a great example of an S'G' M1 Carbine. JWA
