World War I USMC 1st Marine Aviation Force P1917 wool tunic. The tunic is unmarked and does not exhibit any size or manufacture markings. The left shoulder displays a multipiece felt on wool USMC aviation roundel that is machine sewn to the tunic. The felt circles were layered on top of each other and then hand stitched together in order to create the roundel on the patch. This design was used during World War I and into the early post-War period by the US Marine Corps. These roundels were usually painted on the fuselage of US Marine Corps aircraft and often depicted a US Army Air Service World War I style tri-color roundel with an anchor and eagle. The tunic is missing collar insignia but retains all of its metal buttons. The buttons are US Army general service eagle buttons, some of which are sewn to the tunic with different thread. Some of the buttons may have separated from the tunic and were then resewn. It was not uncommon for Marines to utilize Army uniforms during World War I. The tunic remains unsoiled and unblemished as there are no rips, stains, or moth nips. CONDITION: Overall excellent. JLD
