This is a nice example of a Model 1860 Cavalry Saber, which was one of the most heavily used edged weapons during the Civil War. The sword is marked "US / A.H.K. / 1864" on the obverse ricasso and "Made by / AMES MFG CO. / [Illegible]" on the reverse. The sword consists of a slightly curved blade, brass guard, and leather wrapped wood grip that is held nicely together by brass wire and is complete with its original steel scabbard. CONDITION: The blade has aged and exhibits a gray patina with scattered pitting throughout. The tip remains somewhat sharp and there are no chips along the edges of the blade. The brass guard and knucklebow remain tight and exhibit a pleasing light patina with scattered blemishes. The shallow grooved, center-swelled wood grip features black leather wrap that has aged well but exhibits loss and cracking around the pommel. Brass wire is somewhat loose but mostly remains tightly wrapped around the wood grooves. The steel scabbard has acquired a pleasant dark patina and exhibits areas of pitting. The two ring mounts remain tight and secure. Overall good. JLD
