Whitneyville Armory lever action rifle. Made circa early 1880s. Barrel is marked "WHITNEYVILLE ARMORY, CT. U.S.A." in front of the rear sight. "44 CAL." marked in front of the receiver. 2 line patent dates on the upper tang. Octagon barrel with blade front sight and u-notch leaf rear. Full length magazine tube. Original blued finish on the metal components. Screw in the top of the action looks to be a replacement. Standard shape lever. Wood has a light oil finish. Crescent metal butt plate with trapdoor. CONDITION: Metal retains 50% or less of its original finish with most areas forming a heavy brown patina. Wood has handling marks dents and scratches. Front sight blade is loose. There is a repaired crack on the left side of the forearm. Bore is frosted with a few minor pits. Strong rifling retained. Mechanically fine. JWA
