Vey nice example of Confederate foot officer's sword complete with scabbard that was manufactured by Louis Froelich. The 33" blade is classically Confederate and features an unstopped double fuller with signs of slight casting flaws. Like most Confederate makers, Froelich’s sources for brass, iron, and steel varied in quality. The guard features typical floral scrolls and a cast and chased shield that contains the letters "CS". The reverse of the guard, directly under the shield features the letters "LF" for Louis Froelich. Following the guard is the grooved, center-swelled wooden handle that is wrapped with leather and held together with braided brass wire. More foliate scrolls lead to the angled, domed pommel which exhibits evidence of the varying quality of brass through the dark red spots. The sword is complete with the leather scabbard. The scabbard body is excellent in its black color and finish along with its tight seam. The scabbard features 2 brass mounts which are identical to those that are encountered on other Louis Froelich scabbards, one example is featured in the book "Louis Froelich Arms-Maker to the Confederacy" on page 44. The mounts and drag are gilded or gold painted and show evidence that this sword was perhaps hanging in a GAR post after the war. CONDITION: The bade exhibits a pleasant dark gray patina with areas of pitting and surface rust. The guard has aged pleasantly exhibiting scattered blemishes. The grip is in good condition with scuffs in the leather and the brass wire remains tight. The scabbard is clean overall and the leather has held together nicely as the stitching remains tight. The mounts and drag remain tightly secured to the scabbard. Tip of the drag exhibits oxidation. This is a nice example of a desirable Confederate sword. Overall good. JLD
