Standard configuration G98/40 bolt action rifle manufactured by Fémáru Fegyver és Gépgyár (FEG) factory in Budapest. Receiver is stamped "jhv/41" over the chamber, with "G 98/40" stamped on the left receiver wall. Eagle over "56" waffenamts are present on various various external components. Right side of buttstock bears 2 eagle over "WaA56" waffenamts. Matching numbers are found on the receiver, barrel, trigger guard, barrel bands, reinforcing band, buttplate, stock, and upper handguard. Bolt assembly does not match receiver, but matches itself. Floorplate and trigger assembly also do not match. The left side of the buttstock bears a "P P" in dots, with the right side of the stock retaining a carved "r P O U. K." just forward of the magazine well. Cleaning rod is not present. Complete with a 1943 dated leather sling. CONDITION: Metal components show varying degrees of wear, with the receiver and barrel retaining pleasant amounts of their original blue finish, showing areas of thinning and wear that show through to gray and brown patina. Barrel bands, reinforcing band show wear and thinning to brown patina, with the rear barrel band shows an area of silvering. Bore is dark, exhibiting oxidation and retaining well defined rifling throughout. Stock shows numerous dings and impressions, but is otherwise sturdy and serviceable. Leather sling shows some age related cracking and some spots of crazing, but is otherwise fine. A nice example of a rare World War II rifle. MLW
