Fine example of a piece of World War II German aircraft fabric, that was most likely cut from the tail section of a light aircraft. This type of linen fabric covered the aluminum ribs and stringers on the fuselage, flaps, ailerons, rudder, and elevators of various German aircraft before and during World War II. These types of fabric coverings were utilized by many nations during the war, as the fabric was used to reduce the weight of the surface behind the hinge line so that the mass-balance weight could also be reduced. This example is painted dark green with a white swastika. Given the dark green camouflage, this aircraft could have been used in a variety of theaters. It is possible that this section was cut from a Fi156 "Stork" or a DFS230 glider, considering the construction of these two light aircraft. CONDITION: The fabric is decently preserved and appears to have been folded at some point, due to the cracking pattern. This was most likely from being cut from an aircraft, then being stored in a GI's pocket or haversack, finally being folded in order to be sent home as a war souvenir. The edges are uneven, and the fabric measures approximately 17" x 15 - 1/2" not including the frame. The colors remain vibrant and there are typical blemishes that would be expected of a piece of fabric that was cut off of an aircraft during World War II. Overall very good.
