Harper's Ferry US M1842 percussion musket, dated 1848. Many of the original smoothbore Model 1842s were rifled during the American Civil War era. 42" round barrel in .69 caliber rifled with brass blade front sight on Wickham style front barrel band. Barrel is dated 1852 near breech with "VP" proof mark on left side above wood line. Trumpet head full length ramrod is present and possibly the original. Lock is marked with US armory eagle ahead of cock with "HARPERS / FERRY / 1848" behind cock. 1 piece plain walnut stock in 3 barrel band musket configuration complete with US marked military buttplate. Stock is hand carved with soldier wearing a pack with the abbreviation "SC" firing his musket in uniform and depicts a very risque caricature of that same soldier's warm welcome home from battle. CONDITION: Very good, with barrel cleaned at one point but now beginning to form a light brown patina. No cartouche present. Stock is very good as cleaned with scattered handling marks throughout. Carving is crisp and easily legible. Action is tight with two crisp stops at half and full cock. Bore is dark with strong 3 groove rifling. A nice condition M1842 with a unique carving. TON
