US M1841 Mississippi Rifle originally manufactured by Tryon and dated 1848. During the Civil War, Henry E. Leman (Lancaster, PA) contracted with Pennsylvania to alter Model 1841 Mississippi rifles for use. These alterations including turning down the barrel for use with a socket bayonet, reaming to .58 caliber and rerifling, and installing a brass blade front sight after the old one was removed during the turning down process. 33" round barrel in .58 caliber rifled with 3 groove rifling, dovetailed leaf rear sight, and correct brass blade front. Barrel is marked "GW" / "V" / "P" with "STEEL" / "130" on left barrel flat. "130" alteration number is also on buttplate tang. Inside of lock is marked with "66" alteration assembly number. Single piece walnut stock with 2 brass barrel bands, brass trigger guard, brass "US" marked buttplate, and brass storage compartment. Both cartouches are visible on left stock flat opposite lock but are not legible. CONDITION: Very good, with barrel being heavily cleaned and polished at one point but is beginning to form a speckled brown patina. Stock is very good as sanded and refinished with cartouches faint, and other than handling marks and a chip on left side near front barrel band, is strong with no major cracks. Brass is overall a mellow patina with areas of cleaning and polishing, namely at storage compartment. Action is tight with 2 clear stops at half and full cock. Bore is dark with moderate abrasion and well-defined rifling. An attractive M1841 Mississippi rifle in a desirable configuration. TON
