US M1816 musket originally manufactured by Springfield in 1830. 42" round barrel in .69 caliber with 3 groove rifling, M1858 leaf rear sight, and integral blade front sight on Wickham style front barrel band. This musket was contract converted for the New Jersey government in 1861 by Hewes and Phillips. Conversion included rifling of barrel, addition of rear sight, lock conversion from flintlock to percussion, and installation of a chambered breech with integral nipple bolster with blowout screw. Barrel is marked with "H&P" on the top of the barrel where chambered breech and barrel meet and is dated 1861 on barrel tang. Barrel is also marked with "P" proofmark and "NJ" signifying ownership by the state of New Jersey on left barrel flat underneath woodline. One piece walnut stock in 3 barrel band musket configuration complete with "US" marked buttplate. Stock is marked with "JN" and "A" / "2" cartouches on left stock flat opposite lock. CONDITION: Excellent for its age, with additional brown finish added and light handling marks throughout. Stock is excellent as lightly cleaned with no major signs of distress. Action is tight with 2 crisp stops at half and full cock. Bore is frosted with well defined rifling and moderate abrasion from use with corrosive black powder. TON
