Winchester Fourth Model Engraved 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine made by Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1881. Blued round 20" rifled barrel marked "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT. KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED MARCH 29. 1866 OCTOBER 16. 1860" with integral blade front sight mounted behind front barrel band, flip-style non-adjustable leaf rear sight, and blued full tubular magazine. Gunmetal engraved frame with iron saddle ring and blued loading gate. Frame engraved with chain pattern on edges with deer and fox (?) animals in circle with buttplate also engraved with floral pattern. Engraving most likely done by an aftermarket engraver of the day of unknown location. Walnut plain carbine-style stock with engraved brass trapdoor buttplate with steel 4-piece cleaning rod with brass tip. Number on tang channel "6890" matches last four digits of serial number on lower tang. Walnut plain forearm held with barrel band. CONDITION: Barrel blue has faded to a plum patina with some pitting around the muzzle and on the end of the magazine tube and on the barrel bands. Frame has an aged golden looking patina with nicks and dings from usage. Wood has added coat of wax or oil with usage dings and marks. Pitted bore with sticky mechanics. DLM
