Smith breechloading percussion carbine made by the American Machine Works, Springfield, Massachusetts from 1861 to 1865 with around 30,000 made. Gun has round rifled barrel with blade front sight, rear graduated flip sight, and single barrel band. Case hardened percussion frame with single trigger and push-button chamber opener. Frame marked with "POULTNEY & TRIMBLE BALTIMORE, U.S.A.", "MANUFACTURED AM'N M'CH WKS SPRINGFIELD, MASS", "SMITH'S PATENT/ JUNE 23 1857", and serial number "11073". Walnut stocks with "JH" and "GR" inspectors stamps with iron furniture and slide bar with ring. CONDITION: Overall good with metal turning a brown patina and some light handling discoloration. Wood has traces of original varnish with hairline crack behind lower tang and usage marks and dings. Good bore and mechanics. DLM
