Model 1840 Medical Staff Officer's sword that appears to have been manufactured by Klingenthal. The pommel is topped by an acorn shaped finial and the grip exhibits a circle filled with a bold federal eagle on each side perched on top of thickly cast and chased floral motifs. The crossguard features equally ornate detail with branches that are formed as scrolling leaves. Shield shaped langets extend downward from the quillon block. The obverse langet contains the letters "MS" which are cast into the langet and are covered by an applied silver plate above 6 stars bordered by garland, while the reverse langet is blank. Most Kligenthal swords have 7 stars instead of 6. Once the handle and guard are removed, the faint dry needle engraved markings of what appears to be "Klingenthal" can be seen under pitting and surface rust. There are also faint inspector markings above the engraving. These are followed by the patriotic blade etchings, which begin with a half dome similar to what is pictured in Tillman's book. The blade features an oval cross-section, without a fuller, and is double edged ending at a spearpoint. The blade is correctly marked "U.S." on the obverse and “E Pluribus Unum" on the reverse. The scabbard is brass and exhibits great detail on the deeply cast and chased floral mounts at the middle carrying ring and drag. The correct 2 carry rings at the throat and single ring on the middle mount are all present. CONDITION: The etched motifs that adorn the blade remain mostly legible but are muted in some places due to a gray patina. The point remains sharp and there are no chips in the edges. Slight rust under the guard, blade exhibits areas of pitting. The scabbard exhibits scattered blemishes. This is a very nice example of a Model 1840 Medical Staff Officer's sword. Overall very good.
