According to the consignor: "The Colt Navy, .36 caliber, serial #100544, Confederate manufactured holster (authenticated by Norm Flayderman, a friend and neighbor of my grandfather), T-64, $500 denomination circulated Confederate paper currency are war souvenirs. The pistol was surrendered to Capt. R. Dyer, (who married my great grand mother's sister) 1st Maine Cavalry Division, by a captain in either the 4th or 7th Virginia Cavalry. Dyer (originally from Augusta, ME) was seconded to Joshua Chamberlain's group which supervised Lee's surrender at Appomattox, and later garrisoned at Appomattox. The Virginia cavalry captain had been issued the Colt Navy while at West Point, resigned his commission and joined the insurrection, he was originally from Petersburg." CONDITION: Good, with virtually all iron assembles turned a cleaned grey patina with scattered age related pitting throughout. Trigger guard and backstrap have been cleaned to an even brass appearance overall. Grips have been fit well, but show areas of finish loss especially on high edges as well as handling marks throughout. Wedge, wedge retaining screw, as well as frame screws are replacement. Cylinder scene is extremely faint. Action is tight but has significant endshake as gun is rebuilt. Bore is dark with visible rifling. Holster is very good for its age with age-related cracking and crazing but is pliable. A Civil War era production 1851 Navy with a period correct holster and Confederate 500 dollar bill that makes for a handsome set.
