US M1855 rifled musket manufactured by Springfield Armory and dated 1858. 40" round barrel in .58 caliber with unusual 7-groove rifling, military ladder rear sight, and blade front. Barrel is dated 1858 near breech with typically seen "VP" proof on left above woodline. Lock is marked "U.S." / "SPRINGFIELD" with US Armory Eagle on Maynard tape primer door ahead of cock with "1858" lock date behind cock. 1-piece plain walnut stock in 3-barrel band configuration with iron nosecap and US marked military buttplate. Stock is marked with faint "ESA" and "HWG" cartouches on left flat of stock in ovals. CONDITION: Very good, with metal components turned an untouched brown-grey patina throughout. Stock is good with handling related dents and dings throughout and burnout-related repair near nipple bolster. Action is crisp and tight with two clear stops at full and half cock. Bore is bright with crisp 7-groove rifling. TON
