Excellent example of an early 20th century patriotic U.S. naval trapunto commemorating a sailor's Pacific cruise. Not only is the craftsmanship of this banner stunning, but it is also researchable as it is identified to the sailor that this banner was made for. This embroidery was most likely made in Japan as a souvenir for the sailor to commemorate his voyage to Japan with the USS California. The banner is constructed of beautiful silk floss and metallic thread that is embroidered on a slate blue silk field. The words "IN REMEMBRANCE OF MY CRUISE CHINA JAPAN AND PHILIPPINE WATERS" are contained in a banner that is draped over 13 white stars. The banner and stars rest above a perched screaming eagle that is perched on bundles of arrows which are behind a thick silk threaded patriotic shield that contains a photograph of the sailor. The shield sits in between a panoply of American flags, three on each side. The flags drape down to the bottom of the banner and hover above crossed cannons, an anchor, and cannon balls that rest on top of a banner that reads "E PLURIBUS UNUM". The dates "1908" and "1912" flank the sides and the name "CARL. KAISER. / COPPERSMITH" is centered just above the banner. Finally, the highlight of the embroidery is a beautiful painting of the USS California leading a column of US naval vessels with Mt. Fuji shadowing the armada in the background. CONDITION: The embroidery presents excellently and would compliment any naval collection. The colors remain strong and vibrant. The thick designs remain intact with a few signs of wear including the left edge of the banner which has loosened and a flaw towards the center of the anchor. Regardless, the designs still pop and the embroidery presents excellently in the professional, sturdy frame and would compliment any naval collection. Overall very good. JLD
