Wonderful large example of an early 20th century patriotic U.S. naval trapunto commemorating a sailor's Pacific cruise. This embroidery was most likely made in Japan as a souvenir for the sailor to commemorate his expedition to Japan with the Great White Fleet. The trapunto banner is constructed of beautiful silk floss and metallic thread that is embroidered on a slate black silk background. The designs feature both American and Japanese themes and are very patriotic in nature. The words "IN REMEMBRANCE OF MY CRUISE CHINA JAPAN AND PHILIPPINE ISLANDS" are contained in a banner that is flanked by elegant scrollwork. The banner rests above 13 white stars that are overtop of an aggressive eagle in flight with a US flag clenched between its talons. The flag is beautifully made with a tasteful crosshatch pattern throughout its length. The eagle is bold with elegant details to the feathers and even contains the details of a bloodshot eye. It almost seems as if the eagle is in battle with the roaring Japanese dragon at the bottom of the banner, as both creatures appear to lunge at one another, locking eyes anticipating an attack. The dragon is constructed of thick silk floss and metallic thread and seems as if it will come to life. Centered in between the two creatures is a patriotic shield resting on top of arrows and olive branches. The shield contains a photograph of an unidentified sailor, who most likely requested this banner be made to commemorate his cruise. CONDITION: The colors remain strong and vibrant. The thick designs remain intact with the only signs of loose thread evidenced on the eagle's left wingtip. This example is professionally framed and the vignette compliments the banner. Overall excellent. JLD
