Wonderful example of an early 20th century patriotic U.S. naval trapunto commemorating a sailor's Pacific cruise. This embroidery was most likely made in Japan as a souvenir for the sailor to commemorate his voyage to Japan with the Great White Fleet. The trapunto banner is constructed of beautiful silk floss and metallic thread that is embroidered on a slate blue silk field. The designs feature both American and Japanese themes and are very patriotic in nature. The words "IN REMEMBRANCE OF MY CRUISE CHINA JAPAN AND PHILIPPINE ISLANDS" are embroidered overtop of spread winged screaming eagle that is perched on a US flag and an anchor. There is a banner that reads "E PLURIBUS UNUM" that is waving behind the anchor. There is also a patriotic shied along with a bundle of arrows and olive branches. Beneath the American designs is a ship's life ring that is centered above a Japanese dragon. There is also a photograph of the unidentified sailor that has fallen out of place and now rests in the bottom right corner of the frame. CONDITION: The colors remain strong and vibrant. The thick designs remain intact with no signs of loose threads and pop out of the banner. The frame remains sturdy and exhibits handling marks. Overall very good. JLD
