Nice example of an early 20th century US patriotic trapunto embroidery. This banner was most likely made for a sailor of the Great White Fleet in Japan during their voyage around the globe from December 16, 1907, to February 22, 1909, under the orders of President Theodore Roosevelt. The trapunto banner is constructed of beautiful silk floss and metallic thread that is embroidered on a light purple silk field. The designs feature typical American themes and are very patriotic in nature. The embroidery features a banner that reads "E PLURIBIS UNUM" at the top that is draped over a eagle taking flight that is carrying a patriotic shield and flanked by two American flags with protruding olive branches at the 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock, and 9 o'clock positions. The eagle is especially wonderfully detailed from each of its individual feathers down to its eye that seems to be searching outside of the frame. CONDITION: The banner exhibits several small tears to the silk filed along with various wrinkles. The colors remain strong and vibrant. The thick designs remain intact with no signs of loose threads. The banner rests in a professional frame but due to the wrinkles may need to be remounted. Overall good. JLD
