This form of firearm is the first true firearm, essentially consisting of a cannon mounted on a wooden pole. They were fired via manual ignition, with no trigger mechanism, and had the added effect of spewing tumultuous amounts of smoke and noise. This example is cast bronze (metal is nonferrous), reinforced with eight raised rings; six of uniform length and spacing, one over the breech with the touch hole and significantly longer, and a raised muzzle. There is a lengthy Chinese inscription on the neck, just behind the touchhole ring, with a second less formal set of characters in front oft the touch hole, cut in a "chippier" pattern. One applied sticker on left side of touchhole, largely worn away, with remnants of Chinese characters, and another applied sticker on the pole. Plain pole which is affixed to body of cannon via side pins. CONDITION: Very good. Bronze is an even dark patina, with legends still largely crisp. Some handling marks and dings from age throughout that do not detract. Pole has numerous splits and holes from termite damage. One of the sidenails is missing, allowing pole to rotate slightly. Bore is excellent. A rare opportunity to acquire firearms of this type and in good condition. WEIGHT: 10 lbs 3 oz. PROVENANCE: The Collection of John K. Lattimer. EMW
