Very nice early German halberd that features engraved and punched decorations. The blade measures measures 9" and the beak measures 4 - 1/2" in length. The squared point measures approximately 15". The beak was forged into a reinforced spearpoint. The blade and beak feature beautifully engraved military motifs including, spears, swords, armor, and brass wind musical instruments which are intertwined with scrollwork and various other designs. The halberd has its original long iron straps with which secure the blade to the approximately 69" haft. 2 straps are directly connected to the head while 2 others were inserted to reinforce the haft. Most of the iron nails are missing from the straps which are held in place by string. One of the straps is marked with the number "3" which appears to be an old inventory number. The haft appears to be a later replacement. CONDITION: The blade, beak, and point exhibit a pleasant gray patina with scattered pitting. There is evidence of hand forging hammer marks especially around the edges. The haft is in poor condition and exhibits handling marks, bug damage, and deterioration. There is also a large break just below the iron straps. Overall good. PROVENANCE: Ex-Lattimer Collection. JLD
