Circa 1972. A fine pair of 12 bore London best guns built with 27" blued steel chopper lumps barrels. Both sets of barrels have 2 - 1/2" chambers, ejectors, and London nitro proof markings. The narrow concave and tapered ribs are numbered accordingly "1" and "2" in gold at breech and have brass round front bead sights. Top of left barrel reads "7, BURY STREET, ST. JAMES'S. LONDON, ENGLAND". Top of right barrel reads "STEPHEN GRANT & SONS.". Bottoms of barrels are stamped with the guns serial numbers (A) "20838" and (B) "20837". Both sets of barrel flats are stamped accordingly with early London nitro proof markings, chamber length "2 1/2"" and 12 (for gauge). The (A) gun is choked Modified and Modified and the (B) barrels are choked Improved Modified (left) and Improved Cylinder (right). The auto safe and muted case colored actions are built with single mechanical triggers and disk set strikers. Blued top levers are numbered "1" and "2" in gold and thumb pieces are checkered. Safety slides are checkered and engraved. Both guns actions are nicely engraved with traditional tight scrolls and fences are decorated with similar scrolls and leaves. The trigger which extends to a long bottom strap is blued matching top lever, with scrolls and with individual guns serial numbers. Guns are built with reddish-brown oil finished European walnut stocks. Stocks have English straight hand grips with diamond point checkering, gold shield with shaded block initials engraved "A.G.C.". Buttstocks are completed by brown leather covered pads. Matched checkered splinter forends are numbered "1" and "2" in gold on forend tip escutcheons and are built with Anson-styled push-button releases. Forend metal is scroll engraved. Anson release and interior iron metal is case colored. Guns live in a double leather luggage case with an "ATKIN GRANT & LANG" paper trade label and two sets of nickel plated James Purdey & Sons snap caps. CONDITION: Very Good. (A) Barrels could use tightening. Muzzle top right barrel has an older ruff edge; retains 87% blue, handling and storage marks on buttstock and forend. (B) Barrels retain 87% blue, handling and storage marks on buttstock and forend. Case is good with scuffs and bruising and with one strap torn. Nice matched pair of game guns.
