Frederick Morgan was one of the greatest British genre painters of his time specializing in happy childhood scenes. His father John Morgan (1823-1886) was a genre artist and had a great influence on his work. After an early success at the Royal Academy, his career languished, and he became focused on portraits of children. His work paid off and his scenes of idyllic childhood became so popular that thousands of reproductions of his paintings were made and sold, including for advertising Pear Soap and others.
