Burnside Rifle Company Burnside percussion carbine. 5th Model carbine made 1863-1865. Standard 1856 patent date on the top of the frame. "CAST STEEL 1963" marked on the barrel. Right side of the lock is marked "BURNSIDE RIFLE CO./PROVIDENCE R.I.". Matching serials on the frame and breech block. Inspector stamps on most of the metal parts. Left side of the wrist has 2 boxed inspector cartouches. Blade front sight with standard flip up rear. Metal finishes look to be original, forming a brown patina in most areas. Saddle ring bar and ring are present. Stock and forearm have a light oil finish. Smooth finish metal butt plate. CONDITION: Metal retains 50% of its finishes with a brown patina covering most areas. Some cleaned pitting on the saddle ring bar, lever and butt plate. Wood has handling marks, dents and scratches. Bore is shiny with crisp rifling. Hammer is tight. Nipple is well formed. Mechanically fine. JWA
