This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/14/2021
Lot consists of 2 items (A) Regulation 1858 pattern double-bag Union army knapsack. Tarred canvas with leather shoulder straps and tabs. Standard configuration soft pack with 1 interior compartment secured by straps and buckles and a large pocket with flap tied by rawhide thongs. Developed in conjunction with the 1855 rifleman's belt. The pack shoulder straps split to secure the pack on the back and steady it by hooking into the belt or across the chest. CONDITION: Poor to Fair. Numerous tears to the canvas. Leather straps present. 1 rawhide thong present. (B) 1861 cartridge box and shoulder belt with both plates. Standard configuration box with sewn latch tab and buckles. Belt loops reinforced with rivets. Shoulder belt 2.25" wide. Both plates present and mounted upside down. Thong present on sling plate. None on box plate. No maker's mark visible. CONDITION: Good to very good. Box is solid. Outer flap and inner flap with side ears present. No magazine tins. Implement pouch, flap and tab present. 1 buckle tore the chape and is secured by thread. The other has partly torn through, but the sling is firmly in place. Both box and sling show wear, scuffing with finish loss and oxidation to brown, but all from legitimate field use. This comes with a collector note identifying it to soldier named Perry in the 25th GA. This seems to be a misreading of a legitimate war time stencil inside the sling that seems to read Perry, but also "Co. A 25," most likely a Union army company letter and soldier's "rack" number, though we do find a Perry in both the 25th GA Battalion and Regiment. The pack and cartridge box rig are good examples of Civil War infantry field gear.
