Lot consists of 3 Confederate shells: (A) Scarce bourreleted Read 3" shell with fuse adaptor and base ring in place. CONDITION: Excellent. Shallow pitting overall not affecting contours. Fuse and ring with nice surface. Named the prototype Virginia pattern as thought to be the earliest form introduced Winter 1862-63 with wood fuse adaptor and Spring 1863 with CS copper fuse adaptor. Mostly found in 1863 contexts with a few still in use in 1864. (B) CS 12 pound shell. Fuse adaptor in place. Iron side-loader plug. CONDITION: Excellent. Appears unfired. Minor surface pitting, scaling. Pleasing color. (C) CS sideloading 12-pound spherical case shot. Find location not noted. Nice ground exploded example, showing bottom fractures segmenting the case but leaving much of the interior matrix and shot in place. CONDITION: Very good. No fuse or plug. Surface pitting overall. Grayish brown color. Appears to have a small stabilizing pin inserted for handling and display. Three good Confederate Civil War projectiles of differing form.
