Lot consists of (A) US M1836 percussion pistol manufactured by A. Waters of Milbury, Massachusetts and dated 1840. 8 - 1/2" round barrel in .54 caliber smoothbore with brass blade front sight. Barrel is marked "JM" on left side above woodline. Lock was converted to percussion. 1 piece walnut stock with iron mountings and captured ramrod. CONDITION: Very good, as heavily cleaned and blade front sight filed down with scattered freckling throughout. Stock is very good with no major cracks and has been cleaned. Cartouches are present but faint. Mechanically fine. Bore is frosted with modest abrasion. Found in barrel is a handwritten note claiming that this gun at one point belonged to US President Taft and that it was bought from a grandchild of his. (B) US M1842 percussion pistol manufactured by H. Aston of Middletown, Connecticut and dated 1847. Model 1842 martial pistols with Mexican War era lock dates are considered desirable by martial pistol and US military collectors alike. 8 - 1/2" round barrel in .54 caliber smoothbore with brass blade front sight. Barrel is marked "JH" on left side above woodline. 1 piece plain walnut stock with brass mountings and captured ramrod. Stock is hand-marked on bottom flat near trigger guard "1st S.C.V.". CONDITION: Good, as lightly cleaned with a mottled brown patina throughout. Stock and nipple bolster show evidence of heavy use, with nipple deformed from prolonged firing. Stock is very good as cleaned and repaired cracks near lock and opposite lock. Mechanically fine. Bore is heavily frosted. TON
