Matched pair of pistols with octagonal to round barrels with a matted wedding ring at girdle and marked" PATENTED" "1837" "CAST STEEL" on adjacent flats, bottom flat marked with serial numbers. Hammer marked "ALLENS PATENT". Round body actions with spare scroll engraving; backstrap with light beaded decoration. Two piece stocks with central retaining screw. Mainspring screws are sticking out of the front strap, normally seen on these pistols. Housed in a clever little case with purple diamond hatch velvet and fitted to hold both pistols vertically, a number of projectiles, key, small leather pouch, a powder flask with repoussé design, and a combination bullet mold and barrel wrench. CONDITION: Very good, both pistols have a smooth chocolate patina on the metal with some normal handling marks from an age of use. Octagonal sections of barrels have some silvering from an aggressive use of the barrel wrench to try to free frozen barrels. Stocks are very good with normal handling marks and impressions throughout. Mechanically fine, bores are good with strong rifling and some even oxidation. Case is good with some areas of softening from items being in place, accessories are very good with some marks from handling and use commensurate with guns. A neat case that would have allowed the owner to pack numerous items for self defense is a reasonably compact package. EMW
