This political broadside is a clever attack on the northern peace movement of the Civil War that urged compromise for the sake of peace, but which opponents argued could only result in the dissolution of the Union. In this case, the writer urges supporters of the "peace-and-secession" doctrine of the Democrats to read a speech opposing secession by Alexander H. Stephens, by then Vice President of the Confederacy. This presentation makes a case not so much for Stephens's hypocrisy, but ties potential supporters of a peace plan to Stephens' initial motives in maintaining a government that had in fact worked in favor or expanding slavery and gave satisfactory disproportional representation to the South in all departments of government. It is a very interesting broadside countering a movement that even Lincoln feared might doom his election chances in 1864. CONDITION: Excellent. Professionally matted and framed. Ready to hang.
